Your Wedding Day Speech – Basics
Your maid of honour speech is an extremely important part of the wedding, especially to the bride. It can be difficult to know where to start when looking to plan your speech.
You have been asked to be the maid of honour and your thoughts are all about what a pleasure and an honour that is. However, when asked to do a wedding speech as well it can make many people very nervous. I know that’s how I felt. So what can you do to make things go smoothly and to ensure that you have a perfect wedding speech.
It is perhaps useful to think about wedding speech etiquette and to make sure that you try to observe a few rules. For example, it is best not to be offensive or rude in your speech. This can often be tempting in an effort to create a funny wedding speech but it is best to stay away from this route. Also try not to embarrass the bride in anyway. This way you will not offend anyone, regardless of the type of relationship you have with the bride. I think that this will also help to keep your wedding toast professional.
Also, think about the other wedding day speeches that will be made. For example, think about what the best man speech is likely to say, the groom’s speech and also the father of the bride speech. If there is a particular story or scenario that is likely to be covered then it might be best to stay away from that other wise you bringing it up might be repetitive or depending on the wedding speech order you could spoil what the others will say. Remember that you want your wedding toast to be memorable and different.
Maid of honor speeches are often best when they are brief. However, do not make your wedding toast too short. I know it can be tempting when you are nervous about your speech and you would just like to get it over and done with but on the day you and everyone else will enjoy it much more if it is of an appropriate lenght and not unncessarily short. It is useful to practice your speech infront of someone else first. Aim to talk calmly and not too fast and your friend can then let you know if he or she feels that your maid of honour speech is too long or too short.
